Open-Source

Wheels4Wheels releases its software under the free and open source MIT License, making the code available for inspection, modification, and reuse. Following scientific best practice, anyone can check the methods and improve the code. Full dataset access is managed by request so we can support people using it and learn what it gets used for.

The Data

The dataset is available by request in standard, widely compatible formats: JSON for sensor telemetry, and JPEG for phototelemetry frames from the Bolt scooters’ onboard cameras. The sensor data is approximately 1.1 GB across 175 ride files, covering roughly 122 hours of telemetry. The phototelemetry set adds roughly 13 GB across more than 162,000 individual frames (about 1.9 hours if played as continuous 24 fps video), sampled at roughly one frame every five seconds and captured by camera-equipped Bolt scooters during a multi-day campaign in May 2025. All data was processed through the Wheels4Wheels CLI, which integrated, cleaned, and georeferenced the sensor and camera data into one reliable, multi-modal dataset – ready for research, urban planning, and integration with open-source map databases such as OpenStreetMap.

The Tool

The Wheels4Wheels CLI allows individuals and organizations to process their own telemetry data. Whether it comes from a personal e-scooter or a fleet of vehicles, users can translate their data into accessibility parameters and contribute them, following OpenStreetMap's rules for organised and automated editing. The tool is open source on GitHub and includes sample data, not the full dataset.
